India has the second largest population in the world after China. While China contributes to 18.47 percent of the world’s population, India is not far behind with 17.70 percent of the global population.

According to Worldometer data, India is followed by the United States of America with 4.25 percent of the world’s population. The United Nations states that the increase in population has largely been accompanied by an increase in the number of people living to reproductive age and with major changes in fertility rates, increased urbanization and increased migration. It warns that it will have an impact on future generations. To overcome this problem, attention should be paid to population management at the world level.

History of World Population Day

The celebration of World Population Day on 11 July was initiated in 1989 by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme. In fact, by July 11, 1987, the figure of the global population had crossed 5 billion, in view of which it was decided to celebrate and continue this day keeping in mind the global interests. Various programs are organized to spread awareness on World Population Day.

Various social programs and meetings are organized, competitions, road shows, street plays and many other ways are included to spread awareness on World Population Day. At present China and India are the most populous countries in the world.

The main objective of World Population Day is to make the world aware of the increasing population. This day reminds us that the population of the world is increasing continuously, which we have to stop. Increasing population is not a good sign for any nation. On the day of World Population Day, people are motivated to stop the increasing population.

People need to be educated about this to stop overpopulation. The growing population can be stopped only through education. People have to be told that increasing population is a big problem for the world.
