World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought
What Is Desertification?
Desertification does not refer to the expansion of existing deserts. Desertification is the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and arid sub-humid regions. It is mainly caused by human activities and climate changes.
the challenge of desertification
Desertification is a major threat to lands, drylands, affecting millions of people around the world, especially women and children. Such trends need to be reversed quickly as they can reduce forced displacement, improve food security and promote economic growth. At the same time, it can also help to overcome the global climate emergency.
The day which was started 25 years ago is celebrated every year on 17th June with the aim of raising awareness about international efforts to tackle the challenge of desertification. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is the only legally binding international agreement that links environment and development to sustainable land management.
importance of the World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought
In 2021 we have to keep these three things in mind on this day in view of covid 10 droughts, human security, and climate. It is celebrated on 17th June so that we can protect our given nature drought, human security, and climate.
It is noteworthy that 29.3 percent of the land in India is affected by degradation. In view of the increasing magnitude of desertification and drought, a need was felt to spread awareness on a global level to combat it.
It is noteworthy that in the General Assembly of the United Nations, a proposal to prevent desertification was presented in 1994, which was approved in December 1996. At the same time, on 14 October 1994, India signed the United Nations Convention to Stop Desertification, after which this day was celebrated from the year 1995 to combat desertification.
World Day to Combat Desertification & Drought 2021: Theme
The theme of 2021 June 17 is “Restoration. Land. Recovery. We build back better with healthy land”.
Promotion of afforestation can be helpful in dealing with this problem, the use of organic fertilizers in place of chemical fertilizers in agriculture reduces drought. Effective adoption of crop rotation and adoption of innovative and scientific methods of irrigation like drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, etc.
Raise awareness about desertification and plantation should be increased. For the protection of forest wealth on the earth, the cutting of trees should be stopped, for this, a provision of strict law should be made. Along with this, tree plantation programs should be carried out on a large scale on vacant land, along the roads in parks, and on the bunds of fields.
There is also a need that climate-friendly plants and trees should be grown in these places. Conservation of water resources and judicious use of inappropriate amounts can play a very effective role in preventing desertification. For this, the use of dry farming systems in agriculture should be encouraged.
Scientific measures should be given importance in reducing the salinity and alkalinity of the desert.
