Keeping in mind the remarkable contribution made by Professor PC Mahalanobis in the field of economic planning and statistical development after India’s independence, the ‘Government of India’ has declared his birthday ’29 June’ as a special day at the national level every year. It was decided to celebrate it as “Statistics Day”. A notification to this effect was published in the Gazette of India on 5th June 2007. The day is celebrated by organizing seminars, discussions, and competitions to highlight the importance of government statistics in national development.

Who is Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis?
Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis is considered the father of Indian statistics. Born on 29 June 1893, he was an Indian statistician and scientist. He created a measure of comparison between the two data sets now known as the Mahalanobis distance. He has been a major contributor to large-scale surveys. He was a pioneer in anthropometry studies and pilot surveys. He was a member of the Planning Commission 1956–61 and gave a two-sector input-output model for the Second Five Year Plan, which later came to be known as the Nehru-Mahalanobis model. He founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata in December 1931.
