Major Dhyan Chand Biography 2021: Dhyan Chand was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, which is now known as Prayagraj. His father was a soldier in the army. As a child, Dhyan Chand had no particular interest in the game of hockey. He loved wrestling. He completed his studies from a nearby school and then joined the army in 1922 at the age of 16.
After joining the army, his interest started growing in hockey and his accompanying Major Tiwari inspired him to play hockey. Gradually, he got a passion for hockey and after his duty, he used to practice hockey only in moonlit nights.
His name was still Dhyan Singh, but seeing this while practicing in the moonlit night, the soldiers with him put a moon in the middle of his name and that moon gradually changed to Chander, hence Dhyan Singh became Dhyan Chand.
He made himself a big player on the strength of his passion and practice and went on to give his best performance while playing for the army. Due to which he continued to be promoted in the army and he became a major from a soldier. In 1926, he was fielded in the international match. Played his first match against England.

The birth anniversary of hockey magician Major Dhyan Chand ji is celebrated as Sports Day. National Sports Awards are also given on 29th August. Three types of awards are given on this day. Awards are given at Rashtrapati Bhavan on the occasion of Sports Day.

National Sports Day is celebrated every (29 August) all over the country. National Sports Day is celebrated on the occasion of the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand. On this occasion, President Ram Nath Kovind will present the Rajiv Gandhi Sports Award, Dronacharya Award, Arjuna Award, and Dhyan Chand Lifetime Award. This award is given to the best player only.

Major Dhyan Chand Death
After 34 years of service in the Indian Army, Dhyan Chand retired from the Indian Army as a Major on 29 August 1956. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third highest civilian honour, in the same year.
After retirement, he taught at a coaching camp in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. Later he also played the role of Chief Hockey Coach at National Institute of Sports, Patiala for many years. Dhyan Chand spent his last days in his hometown of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
After this, on 3 December 1979 (age 74) Delhi Major Dhyan Chand died.
